HITEC 50 | Class of 2017

Nearly 400 IT business executives and senior leaders gathered at the JCPenney headquarters in Plano, TX on April 5-7 for the first of three 2017 HITEC Leadership Summits.

This three-day event, hosted by JCPenney, featured a great lineup of more than 40 top technology trendsetters from across the country. The event closed with an awards luncheon recognizing the top 50 most influential and notable IT professionals in Latin America/Ibero-America, called the HITEC 50.


PRE-SUMMIT Highlights 
Wednesday, April 5 

The 2017 HITEC Emerging Executive Program (EEP) held its first in-person session on the campus of our host sponsor, JCPenney. The session was led by Anne-Marie Olholm-Azzi, EEP Chair & IT Business Operations Manager at Cisco. The following executives shared their invaluable business experiences with the program mentors and mentees:

HITEC Leaders attended a sold out  welcome reception hosted by Capital One at the Dallas Cowboy Headquarters. There was standing room only as HITEC President, Andre Arebeláez, welcomed HITEC Leaders to Dallas. The attendees were also greeted by Thaddeus Arroyo, CEO, AT&T Business Solutions and International, Jose Gutierrez, Technology Director, Capital One and Mike Amend, Executive Vice President, Omnichannel, JCPenney.


DAY #1 - Leadership Summit Highlights
Thursday, April 6

On the morning of April 6, the Leadership Summit kicked off with the HITEC Women’s Breakfast Series sponsored by Accenture and hosted by JCPenney. The 90-minute session focused on Closing the Gender Pay Gap Faster with Digital and what we can do today to start closing that gap in the IT industry. The breakfast was led by Nellie Borrero, Global Inclusion and Diversity Managing Director, Accenture and Rocio Lopez, IT Executive, Accenture.

HITEC was pleased to offer its members the opportunity to register for one of three 90 minute concurrent sessions offered for the first time at the 2017 HITEC Dallas Leadership Summit. The sessions were offered in response to the survey feedback given by summit attendees of the 2016 HITEC Silicon Valley Leadership Summit.

of the Summit with a warm welcome. 
 

Next, Oracle executives invited to the stage students of Cristo Rey, who are also scholarship recipients of the HITEC Foundation, to present a donation of $10,000.

 

Jorge Lopez, Vice President and Distinguished Analyst, Gartner, gave the first keynote of the day titled, “Digital Business Industry Visions: On The Way to a Digital Society,”

“Technology advancements are not some science fiction story off in the future, it’s here today.”

 

Ileana Rivera, HITEC Board Member and Senior Director of IT, Computing and Client Productivity Services, CISCO moderated the first panel of the day, titled, “Digital Innovation.”

  • If you want to stay around as a business, you constantly need to make incremental changes. ~Mike Amend, Executive Vice President, Omnichannel JCPenney
     
  • If you start talking about change before talking about the “why” and “what you get,” the conversation gets shut down. ~Jennifer Lopez, Senior Director of Product Leadership, Capital One
Fourth Industrial Revolution: Rethinking Innovation and Business:

The second keynote of the day was presented by Steve Hill, Head of Innovation, KPMG. Mr. Hill challenged attendees to reconsider their company’s plan to make the shift from traditional automation software to new cognitive platforms, which make automation tools intelligent and help augment and leverage human knowledge.
 

Great fireside chat with Myrna Soto, HITEC Board Vice President and Corporate Senior Vice President, Global Chief Information Security Officer, Comcast, and Esther Aguilera, President & CEO of LCDA. Soto  gave attendees insight into the journey to getting elected to a corporate board seat.



Key Take-Aways:
  • On a publicly traded board, your immediate priority is to the shareholder.
  • You may make decisions that aren’t comfortable from a human side. This is why you’re an independent director and not an employee.
  • As a board member, you must remain objective with your recommendations. Your duty is to guide the management team in making decisions


DAY #2 - Leadership Summit Highlights
Friday, April 7 

Engaging panel discussion moderated by Gustavo Garcia, Managing Director, Accenture. Experienced IT executives shared their experience and recommendations for digitally transforming organizations, including personalization initiatives, digital experience platforms, and prioritizing people and investing in culture, process and skills.

  • Marcos Jimenez, CEO, Softtek USA
  • Therace Risch, Executive Vice President & Chief Information Officer, JCPenney
  • Michael Garcia, Vice President, Development Services, Fannie Mae



Enlightening presentation on how big data and AI tools can inform diverse candidate intelligence.by Liliana Gil Valletta, Co-Founder and CEO, Cien+ that captivated the audience.

 
Inspiring keynote presented by Marvin Ellison, Chief Executive Office, JCPenney. Mr. Ellison shared his journey to CEO and gave insights into leadership qualities required to lead during times of change, which included the following Top 5  Leadership Commandments: 
  • Be courageous
  • Have intellectual curiosity
  • Know your business
  • Be the best you!
  • Keep things simple

The final session of the day was a diversity and inclusion panel led by Jesse Cortez, Global Inclusion Effectiveness Lead, Inclusion and Diversity, Hewlett Packard Enterprise.
